Even though the official announcement may still be weeks off, Oshkosh officials are optimistic that the Milwaukee Bucks will award an NBA Development League team to the city.
If that decision comes to pass, the construction of an arena in the newly designated “Sawdust District” is expected to serve as a catalyst that will transform the area east of Main Street and south of the Fox River.
An architect’s rendering, shown above, includes a temporary arena where the minor league team could play next year and a larger, permanent facility, both of which would be built on the site of the former Buckstaff factory. The temporary structure would be close to the intersection of Main and South Park while the larger one would be between 10th and 11th Avenues.
The “conceptual vision” includes mixed-use buildings, class A office space and a pedestrian bridge linking the south side to downtown. The hope is that the arena project would also spur the redevelopment of Pioneer Island, to include a hotel, condominiums and a pedestrian path along the river and lake.
